Upon first glance I'm less than impressed with The Oregonian's home page. It's simplistic layout may be appealing to some, but for me it reads as more bland and disorganized. The pictures, a key element to web design in my opinion, play a minut backup role to the blue headlines. But then again, news isn't all about appearance, right? I may fight you on that one.
The section I found most intriguing was Real Time News, because it provides a short description of what is happening with Oregon and National news, as it happens. Including the 9 year-old boy who shot himself in the foot while at target practice with his father. The Oregonian focuses on the thriving nature and economy of Oregon, while taking pride in the various projects and community building efforts they have implemented recently, like the Children's Healing Art Project.
Overall, the site is fairly easy to navigate, with a bar across the top of the page for story selection. One of the details I appreciated on the site was the "Interact" tab, which allows the reader to leave comments on stories, read other viewers' comments, and even participate in a Forum with a specified topic. Today's topic was Oregon, no surprise there.
Another element which I thought might otherwise be overlooked, was the "Shopping" tab, which allows readers to post various discounts, deals, and promotions from local businesses. It's something I would appreciate when looking for something to do for a night out, or a day vacation.
Upon further investigation, The Oregonian does maintain objective perspectives while featuring storys full of facts and detailed information. However, the front page's simplistic appearance initially lost my interest.
